Under brilliant sunshine, the beautiful little grains of salt on fields in Ba Tri district, look like sparkling pearls crystallizing from seawater.
Bao Thuan is one of four coastal communes of Ba Tri district, Ben Tre province. Although the coastal commune, but all of salt fields are far away from the embankments. So, people have to lead salt seawater through inland waterways system to the fields.
The first stage is salt fields preparation. If sandy soil selected by Central Regions in Vietnam, the southern people use soil for the surface of the field.
Therefore, the final stages of preparing salt fields is use a special tool to roll and create a flat surface for salt fields.
Then leading salt water to the fields in tidal time when the seawater in the canal system is on high level to people lead into fields. They often use a special tool to adjust water level.
After a day, Ba Tri people spread a certain salt into the fields to increase salt precipitation, sea salt helps crystallization process faster.
After about 3-4 hours, the salt begin to crystallize on the field. If the water is in high level on the fields, people will have to remove it. This process required a salt-maker must have a lot of experiences to determine the salt concentration in the field to increase efficiency of crystallization.
Depending on sunny or cloudy day which affects to harvesting time. Two days are average time for people in Bao Thuan commune can harvest the salt.
With experiences of salt-maker here, two-days time is just enough for salt to crystallize out on the fields. Anh then they will use tools to gather salt into small dunes for easy collection.
Then people use the baskets (a woven bamboo tool which can carry about 25 kg) to carry salt home and then sell for traders.
Although hardships, but the result after so many days basking under the sun and bathing in salt water is the white pearls heavily on shoulders.
