1874 Treaty between Nguyen Dynasty & French Government

Treaty of 1874

Treaty of 1874 is signed between the Court of the Nguyen and French government with 22 articles. The Nguyen Dynasty recognized French sovereignty over the Six Provinces of Southern Vietnam, undertook to sign no commercial treaty with any other country than France, authorized the evangelization of Vietnam.

It is granted the French liberty of commerce in the ports of the Red River, at Thi Nai (Qui Nhon), Ninh Hải (Hai Duong) and Hà Nội. In these places, the French could establish their consulate and their garrison.
