Trieu Khuc Festival in Vietnamese Culture

Trieu Khuc Festival

Trieu Khuc (Ke Do) Village (Hanoi) has King Phung Hung as its tutelary god, also known as Bo Cai Dai Vuong. This hero stopped in this place before going on to attack the Chinese forces occupying the captal and liberating the country. He ascended the throne on the 10th day of the 1st lunar month (13th century).

A festival is held on that date. Before the commemorative ceremony, a procession carries the King’s cap and tunic from the Sac communal house to the Dai communal house where the ritual includes the traditional dance múa bông. Celebrants and dancers wear ornate traditional clothes and also perform the dance of the dragon. The festival ends at noon, on the 12th day of the 1st lunar month with a foot race with flags recalling the choice of worthy warriors made by Phung Hung.
