Day 2: Ho Chi Minh City Tour (B, L)
Saigon, as the city is still frequently referred to, is Vietnam’s largest city with a population in excess of 9 million. Saigon's history is only 300 years old, less than a third of that of the capital, Hanoi. In 1859, the city was captured by the French and became the capital of Cochinchina. From 1956 until its dramatic demise in April 1975, Saigon was the capital of the US-backed Republic of Vietnam.
Today, Ho Chi Minh City is very much the heart of Vietnamese businesses and entrepreneurs. The city's skyline is rapidly changing, reflecting the sharp influx of foreign trade within the last decade. And yet the city still retains its connections to the past, particularly in Cho Lon, the city's Chinatown. Here dozens of elegant temples and pagodas can be seen. The French left their mark here – as the city has many street cafes and patisseries where fresh croissants can be enjoyed with a cup of coffee.
This city tour unravels HCMC's turbulent past and also provides a glimpse into the fascinating variety the city has to offer. The tour is split into a morning and afternoon schedule, with a tasty lunch in between! Today, we visit the Reunification Palace, the most important building in the city, the War Remnants Museum, formerly known as the Museum of American War Crimes, this is a poignant display of the futility of war; the Notre Dame Cathedral and Old Post Office.
In the afternoon, we visit Cho Lon market, which actually means Big Market – a claim that is well justified as Vietnam’s largest market, the Binh Tay, is located here. The district is home to the city's 400,000 Chinese and has many beautiful temples and pagodas. And then, we visit Ben Thanh market, which is very popular with tourists, primarily due to its central location before transferring back to the hotel. Overnight in Ho Chi Minh city.
Day 3: Ho Chi Minh City - Mekong Tour (B, L)
Today we travel to Cai Be town. We boat to see some local home factories to discover traditional rice paste making, rice pop corn, coco candies, and longans drying process. A delicious lunch will await us at a superb Indochinese villa, Le Longanier, located in a luxuriant garden by the river.
After lunch, we cruise to Dong Hoa Hiep to visit an ancient mandarin house dating from the 19th century where we enjoy some tea. Continuing our journey to Vinh Long, passing beautiful landscapes along Dong Phu canal, Binh Hoa Phuoc, and An Binh islands famous for their fruit orchards. Stops on the way can be made at An Binh ancient Church or at Tam Ho bonsais garden.
After crossing the Co Chien River, the excursion will end at Vinh Long pier around 4 pm, where our awaiting private transportation vehicle will transfer us back to Ho Chi Minh city. Overnight in Ho Chi Minh city.
